Iran Stands by Diplomacy Amid Escalation with Israel

Iran says it has not abandoned – On June 8, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that Tehran remains engaged in diplomatic talks, even as new missile exchanges with Israel intensified. This statement underscores the ongoing pursuit of dialogue despite mutual readiness to escalate tensions.

Following renewed missile exchanges between Israel and Iran since the April ceasefire, remarks from Pezeshkian highlighted that diplomacy is still viable. He emphasized Iran’s commitment to defending its national interests while maintaining the possibility of negotiation.

“Our priority is national security and the peace of our people. We will defend the rights of the nation with authority and will not retreat in the face of any threat.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump reiterated his call for an immediate halt to hostilities, noting that both Israel and Iran appeared open to ending the conflict. “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way,” he tweeted.

Trump also confirmed that Washington’s economic sanctions and pressure on Iran would stay in place until a comprehensive agreement is reached. “The Blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached,” he stated.

Leaders Signal Temporary Truce

After Trump’s intervention, Israel and Iran indicated they were stepping back from further escalation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “At the moment, the fire has ceased,” though he warned of a military response if Iran resumes attacks.

“If Iran makes the mistake and returns to attacking us, we will respond with force.”

Iran’s military similarly announced a suspension of offensive operations, while cautioning that future Israeli actions could provoke stronger retaliation. “Further aggression and hostile acts … will be met with much more severe and crushing measures than before,” the Iranian forces stated.

Regional Powers Urge Calm

Diplomatic efforts intensified as regional governments sought to prevent the conflict from reigniting. Officials reported that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, and Qatar had urged the US to pressure Israel to halt strikes on Iran and Beirut, while simultaneously encouraging Tehran to cease attacks on Israeli targets.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for restraint, stating, “The recent surge in violence in the Middle East is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with a tenuous ceasefire.” He urged all parties to “Exercise restraint and give peace a little more chance.”

Ceasefire Faces Uncertainty

Although fighting has paused temporarily, tensions remain high. Israel continues operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, while Iran maintains pressure around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The conflict’s resolution hinges on the willingness of both sides to prioritize diplomacy over military action.

Iran accused the United States of backing Israel’s actions, claiming coordination between the two nations is inevitable. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei remarked, “No one believes that the Israeli regime would take any action without coordination with the United States,” despite Washington’s public efforts to uphold the ceasefire.

The latest confrontation began when Iran retaliated with missile strikes after Israeli attacks near Beirut. Israeli military reports detailed large-scale strikes on Iranian infrastructure, targeting facilities essential for ballistic missile production. The IDF also claimed to have disrupted air-defense systems in western and central Iran to secure aerial dominance.
