Culinary Catastrophe in the Fields

In Yanghu, situated approximately 130 kilometers northeast of Seoul, agricultural devastation has taken an unusual form. Farmer Lee Sang-hyuk unearthed a troubling discovery: his potato crop had essentially steamed in place.

What looked like a thriving harvest in South Korea’s Gangwon province just seven days prior now resembled boiled vegetables. Lee expressed his dismay to reporters, noting that the damage extended beyond isolated patches.

“It’s not just one or two fields like this. How can I even put it into words? It’s so upsetting,” Lee told The Guardian.

Breaking Temperature Records

South Korea’s meteorological history was rewritten on August 2 when Yangsan, a city in the southeastern region, reached 42.5°C. This marks the highest temperature documented since systematic weather tracking began in 1904.

The greater Seoul metropolitan area, which houses roughly 20 million residents, has similarly endured sweltering conditions approaching 40°C (104°F).

Human and Animal Toll

Japan’s disaster prevention authorities reported that over 18,000 individuals requiring treatment for heat-related illness were transported to medical facilities between July 20 and 26.

Wildlife has not escaped unscathed. According to AP news agency, three lions perished at a Tokyo zoo, with additional animals exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion.

Remarkably, these extremes occurred despite an active El Niño climate pattern, which historically correlates with reduced probability of severe summer heat in Japan.

Hong Kong’s Warning System Under Scrutiny

Hong Kong’s meteorological observatory logged 36.9°C, surpassing all previous measurements since 1884. The city simultaneously grappled with Typhoon Dolphin, whose peripheral winds funneled scorching air into the region.

Despite these record highs, Hong Kong’s outdoor worker heat stress alert remained at its minimum level, prompting criticism from experts.

“The threshold for the red warning is clearly set too high”, Lam Chiu Ying, former head of the Hong Kong Observatory, wrote on Facebook. “If even a record-breaking temperature can’t trigger it, isn’t it just a display piece used to decorate a shop window?”

Following public feedback, Hong Kong’s Labour Department announced it would evaluate the alert framework alongside the observatory.

Continental Extremes

China experienced parallel suffering, with a weather monitoring station in the western Xinjiang territory measuring 50°C during July. Heatwaves also battered northeastern sections of the country.

North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, endured consecutive tropical nights where temperatures failed to drop below 25°C even after sunset.
