Archaeologists Unearth Pre-Hispanic Ruins in Mexico

Theindiapostdaily.com – In the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, archaeologists have revealed ancient ruins that blend classic Mayan elements with previously undocumented architectural styles. These findings, highlighted as “very relevant” by Claudia Sheinbaum, have led the Mexican government to commit to expanding excavation, research, and preservation initiatives.

Distinctive Features of the Site

The newly exposed ruins, dating to the Early Classic period (200–600 AD), include a flagstone and limestone platform decorated with nearly square patterns. A standout element is a circular stone structure, which has no known counterpart in the region. Additionally, a towering monolith was discovered, depicting a human figure with Mayan traits.

This is a unique, unprecedented finding,” remarked Lino Espinoza Garcia, an INAH archaeologist leading the Campo Viejo site near Coatepec. “We don’t have any records so far of a correlation with other ancient sites,” added Alberto Vazquez, the site’s co-coordinator.

Monolith and Its Symbolic Carving

The monolith stands 1.88 meters tall, with a width of 1.47 meters at its broadest and 68 centimeters at its narrowest. Experts interpret the stone’s carving as a symbolic scene: two figures are shown requesting an object, holding a bowl, and receiving a substance. “We think it’s a divine liquid, likely water,” Espinoza explained.

Their actions suggest a ritual involving liquid exchange, possibly linked to a time of severe drought in the area. This could explain why the elite figures are depicted receiving the fluid from a sacred entity,” Espinoza detailed.

The discovery has sparked new theories about pre-Hispanic cultural practices, with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) noting that these attributes have never been recorded in Mexico’s eastern region. (With inputs from news agency AFP)
