Wildfire Near Clayton Grows to 125 Acres; Evacuation Warnings Issued

Wildfire erupts near Clayton in California – On Friday afternoon, a wildfire ignited near Clayton in California’s Contra Costa County, prompting visible smoke plumes in the Mount Diablo region. The blaze originated at the intersection of Morgan Territory Road and Marsh Creek Road, according to incident reports. Located approximately 25 miles southwest of the densely populated Mount Diablo area, the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, leading to widespread visibility of smoke among local residents.

Fire Origin and Spread

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District confirmed the fire began around 2:00 pm local time near the 2430 block of Morgan Territory Road. Initially, the flames consumed nearly two acres before moving uphill through brush and timber on steep slopes. As conditions worsened, the fire expanded to 125 acres, with multiple fire engines deployed to combat the growing threat.

Evacuation Orders and Safety Measures

Officials issued evacuation warnings for Zones CCC-249 and CCC-250, situated between Morgan Territory Regional Preserve and Mount Diablo State Park, around 4:40 pm. While no formal evacuation orders had been enacted by Friday afternoon, residents were urged to prepare for potential displacement. The fire district’s alert emphasized gathering essential items like medications, baby supplies, and important documents, as well as securing pets for immediate transport.

“Gather any important items you could carry with you, including medications, baby supplies, money, important papers, and photos,” said the fire district. “Locate any pets or animals and be prepared to cage or leash them. If you require additional time to evacuate, you should leave now.”

Firefighting Efforts and Naming

To bolster ground crews, Air Attack requested additional aircraft, resulting in the deployment of eight Type 1 air tankers and four helicopters. The Contra Costa County Fire Department temporarily named the fire “Morgan Fire” due to its proximity to Morgan Territory Road. Clayton, located in the east-central part of the county, sits at the eastern base of Mount Diablo, near the Mount Diablo Mine and west of the Oak Hills Trail.

Community Response and Investigation

Residents in the area shared footage of the wildfire on social media, capturing thick black smoke engulfing the Mount Diablo region. Fire department helicopters were also used to assist with aerial suppression efforts. Despite the fire’s location in a sparsely populated mountain area, no structures or habitats were reported at immediate risk. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with no injuries documented so far.

“A video shared by KTVU, a local FOX affiliate, showed smoke and a fire department helicopter circling the area as crews worked to contain the blaze,” reported media outlets.

Mount Diablo, a protected state park, has no permanent residents, but a nearby community of about 1,000 people exists in the Diablo area. Authorities continue to advise residents to monitor emergency updates and stay prepared for evacuation if conditions escalate.
