New York City Faces Flash Flood Threat Amid Intense Rainfall and Storms

NYC flash flood warning – New York City endured torrential rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, leading to flash flood alerts and significant disruptions across all five boroughs. The downpours began in the late morning, prompting emergency alerts and severe flooding on roads and in parts of the city.

Transport Systems Stranded by Rising Waters

Residents in Queens faced dire situations on the Clearview Expressway as floodwaters surged rapidly, trapping vehicles and necessitating rescue efforts by officials, with several cars submerged up to their windows. Similarly, the Long Island Expressway experienced flooding at 188th Street, halting traffic in both directions. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was also temporarily shut down as authorities addressed the deteriorating conditions.

“Severe thunderstorms are hitting across New York City, and much of the city is under a flood advisory. Don’t risk your safety in these dangerous conditions.”

Alongside the flooding, pea-sized hail was anticipated in several areas, with a special weather alert issued for all boroughs except The Bronx at 11:25 AM as the storms moved through the region. The National Weather Service had extended a flood watch across New York City and surrounding regions from Saturday morning through Saturday night, cautioning that heavy rainfall could result in isolated flash flooding incidents.

The Federal Aviation Administration implemented ground stops at LaGuardia, JFK International, and Newark airports until 5 PM, leading to flight delays for passengers due to ongoing thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the city’s public transit network was also impacted, with videos capturing water seeping into several subway stations.

Reports indicated that 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen in certain areas, with additional downpours expected throughout the day. Authorities urged residents to exercise caution during the storms, particularly on flooded roads, as the weather continued to affect travel across the city.
