The department emphasized that the inquiry remains active and that additional details will not be shared at this stage.

“The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” a Greenville Police Department spokesperson told People. “The case is under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.”

Panettiere, aged 36, was discovered lifeless at a South Carolina apartment complex on Sunday, August 16. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the loss publicly through a statement delivered to ABC News.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The precise cause of death had not yet been determined at the time of reporting. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office was scheduled to carry out a full autopsy.

A Career Built on Small-Screen Stardom

Panettiere, who would have celebrated her 37th birthday the following Friday, first entered the entertainment world as a child performer in television commercials and daytime soap operas. Her breakthrough arrived in 2006 when she was cast as a superpowered cheerleader on the NBC series Heroes, a role that became inseparable from the show’s signature rallying cry: “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”

Discussing the show’s cultural impact in a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, Panettiere explained why she believed the series resonated so broadly:

“I think ‘Heroes’ is really hot because it’s just a really great combination of everything that people love — they love reality, they love sci-fi and things like X-Men where they get to dream of something bigger.”

She noted that the series centered on emotionally grounded human narratives and attracted audiences spanning multiple generations. Her work on Heroes earned her three Teen Choice Awards. Separately, she received a Grammy nomination for a children’s spoken-word album released several years after the animated feature A Bug’s Life hit theaters.

Nashville and Country-Music Crossover

After Heroes, Panettiere assumed a leading role on ABC’s Nashville, portraying a fearless young country singer set against Connie Britton’s seasoned veteran. The series completed four seasons before cancellation and was subsequently revived by the CMT network. Throughout its run, Panettiere performed original songs for the program, several of which charted on country music lists.

Her portrayal on Nashville drew two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress. During the show’s lifespan, eleven tracks featuring her vocals reached Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including two duets recorded alongside Britton.
