Should Iran refuse to adapt, the US retains substantial leverage, according to Vance. “We are still in a strong position, and this is a favorable stance for us,” he remarked. The Trump administration’s goal is to redefine ties with Iran if its leadership chooses to abandon regional destabilization and long-term nuclear aspirations.

Recent Naval Incident and Retaliatory Action

Hours before the interview, Trump criticized Iran for breaching the ceasefire following a drone strike on the Singapore-flagged M/V Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, US Central Command conducted retaliatory strikes against Iranian drone storage facilities and coastal radar sites. CENTCOM characterized the operation as a “forceful response,” highlighting that the assault on commercial shipping breached the ceasefire and jeopardized maritime freedom in a vital trade corridor.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran launched at least four One Way Attack Drones at vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

One drone struck the upper deck of a large, costly cargo ship, causing damage, though the vessel continued its journey. He noted that US forces had intercepted three additional drones.

Asked later whether Iran would face consequences, Trump replied: “You’ll find out.” He concluded, “I don’t like the fact that they took a shot yesterday… at a ship. Not an Allied ship, but a ship — very expensive ship. They shouldn’t be doing that.”
