US Postal Service to Launch Diwali-Themed Stamp
Theindiapostdaily.com – The United States Postal Service (USPS) is set to unveil a special commemorative stamp celebrating Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. Scheduled for release in the coming months, this design will mark the occasion with a vibrant representation of the holiday’s cultural essence.
Artistry Behind the Design
The stamp’s intricate rangoli pattern, a traditional Indian art form, was crafted by Houston-based artist Sangita Bhutada. It was captured by photographer Binay Dixit, whose images have already circulated online, showcasing the stamp’s radiant visuals.
Rangoli, as defined by the USPS, is a decorative floor art often made from colored rice powder, chalk, or flower petals. The practice is believed to invite positivity and is a common feature during festive celebrations like Diwali.
Diwali and Politics in the US
Diwali has become a widely recognized holiday across America, with notable events taking place at the White House. The tradition began in 2003 under President George W. Bush, when his advisor Karl Rove organized the festivities in the Indian Treaty Room. Rove initiated the ceremony by lighting a symbolic brass lamp, representing Bush’s greetings to the Indian American community.
President Barack Obama continued the legacy in 2012, becoming the first to personally celebrate Diwali. During the event in the East Room, he remarked,
“While this is a time of rejoicing, it’s also a time for reflection, when we remember those who are less fortunate and renew our commitment to reach out to those in need.”
In 2016, Obama further expanded the tradition by lighting the first diya in the Oval Office.
Continuing the Legacy
President Donald Trump joined the celebration in 2017, lighting a diya with his daughter Ivanka and Indian American guests. However, the White House Diwali tradition paused in 2018 due to the midterm elections. President Joe Biden revitalized it in 2020, hosting the largest Diwali event ever at the executive mansion. The gathering featured over 200 attendees, including First Lady Jill Biden. Biden emphasized the cultural significance of Diwali, stating,
“This is the first Diwali reception of this scale, in this house, ever to be held.”
The Diwali stamp, designed by Jennifer Arnold and overseen by art director William J Gicker, will be available in October 2026. It underscores the growing recognition of South Asian cultural heritage in American institutions.
