Salad Dressing Sales Take a Hit as Americans Shun Leafy Greens

Theindiapostdaily.com – A wave of cyclosporiasis cases sweeping the United States this summer has rattled consumer confidence in fresh salads, and the fallout is landing squarely on the dressing aisle. According to Nielsen data cited in a Tuesday note by TD Cowen analyst Robert Moskow, Kraft Heinz Co. salad dressing sales dropped 20% over the most recent four-week window, while Clorox Co.’s Hidden Valley Ranch brand saw a 5% decline. Both companies had been enjoying a sales and social-media lift tied to World Cup viewing, and the outbreak is now eroding that tailwind.

The Outbreak and the Confusion That Followed

Thousands of Americans developed cyclosporiasis this summer, a gastrointestinal illness triggered by consuming food contaminated with fecal matter. State and federal health authorities traced an initial large cluster of infections in the Midwest to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants, produce that had been sourced from central Mexican farms run by Taylor Farms. Even after Michigan officials declared it safe to return to normal leafy-green consumption, many shoppers remained uncertain about what was permissible and simply stopped buying salads altogether.

The lettuce category itself has felt the shock. Moskow noted that iceberg lettuce sales fell 20% in the latest four-week period, reversing a 5% gain recorded over the preceding twelve weeks. Iceberg accounts for roughly 37% of the $2.6 billion lettuce segment, so the contraction carries real weight.

Restaurant Brands Feel the Chill

Sweetgreen Inc. trimmed its annual outlook this month to account for softer demand for fresh prepared foods. Cava Group Inc. reported a mid-July sales slowdown once consumers became aware of the outbreak, though the company said recent trends have been trending back upward.

What the Analyst Sees Ahead

“We expect consumers’ trust in the industry to gradually improve and sales to recover,” Moskow wrote in his note. “That said, the negative impact to Kraft Heinz and Clorox’s salad dressing brands may prove meaningful in the current quarter.”

He quantified the exposure: if the current rate of decline persists through the remainder of the third calendar quarter, it would translate into a 55-basis-point drag on Clorox’s US retail sales and a 40-basis-point drag on Kraft Heinz’s. Salad dressing represents 2% of Kraft Heinz’s US retail revenue and 11% of Clorox’s, so even modest percentage moves in the category register at the corporate level.

Shoppers Pivot to Frozen and Local

Those avoiding fresh greens have not abandoned vegetables entirely. NielsenIQ data show frozen kale sales up 14% in the three weeks ending August 1 versus the same period a year earlier, with frozen spinach, raspberries, and blueberries also posting growth. Separately, NielsenIQ observed heightened interest in farmers’ markets, interpreting the shift as consumers seeking “greater visibility into sourcing and handling” of their produce.
