Jalalabad in UP Renamed Parshurampuri

Theindiapostdaily.com – The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has given final approval to rename Jalalabad, a town in Shahjahanpur district, as Parshurampuri. This decision underscores the state government’s ongoing efforts to align place names with historical and religious narratives.

The name change was officially endorsed during a cabinet meeting on Sunday, as reported by the Times of India. The renamed municipality will now be known as Parshurampuri Nagar Palika Parishad, replacing the existing Jalalabad Nagar Palika Parishad.

The proposal has been under discussion for several years. After the Uttar Pradesh government forwarded its recommendation to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Union government cleared the name change in August 2025. The move aims to highlight the town’s connection to Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Religious Significance and Support

Jalalabad, historically linked to Emperor Akbar’s name, is now being rebranded as Parshurampuri due to its association with the deity. The town is home to an ancient Parshuram temple and other sites tied to his legacy. Supporters argue the new name better reflects the region’s spiritual importance.

“The demand to rename the town stems from the belief that Jalalabad is the birthplace of Lord Parshuram,” stated advocates, emphasizing the cultural and religious ties.

Local resolutions in favor of the name change were passed in 2018 and 2023. The Shahjahanpur district administration then submitted the proposal to the state government for further review. Union Minister Jitin Prasada, representing the region, supported the initiative and commended the Union Ministry for its endorsement.

Development and Tourism Focus

Recent projects, including the renovation of the temple complex and nearby water bodies, aim to elevate the area’s appeal as a religious tourism hub. These efforts align with the state’s goal of promoting Jalalabad as a significant site connected to Lord Parshuram.

Under Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh has seen multiple renaming campaigns. Cities like Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and Faizabad (now Ayodhya) have undergone similar changes. While some view these updates as restoring historical identity, others question whether they divert attention from pressing developmental needs.
