Yu-ting Kwok, a scientific officer at the Hong Kong Observatory, explained that multiple low-pressure systems have been responsible for the excessive precipitation. These systems included broad atmospheric troughs combined with tropical cyclones named Maysak and Noul. Xiaoming Shi, an atmospheric science professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, identified mesoscale convective systems as another significant factor. Both the Hong Kong Observatory and the China Meteorological Administration project that steady precipitation will continue through at least the upcoming week. Coastal metropolitan areas like Hong Kong face escalating threats from extreme rainfall events. Rising global temperatures enhance atmospheric moisture capacity, intensifying precipitation patterns. Benjamin Horton, chair professor of earth science at the City University of Hong Kong, warned that continued warming will likely produce more powerful downpours and increase the probability of new rainfall records being established.
