Kota’s Coaching Industry Braces for Uncertainty Amid NEET Controversy

Kota, a compact city spanning 50 kilometers, faces an admission cycle shrouded in doubt. Educational establishments and accommodation providers worry that the ongoing dispute surrounding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test undergraduate examination—sparked by allegations of a question paper leak—might deter students who previously returned for another attempt.

Pramod Maheshwari, who established the Career Point Ltd coaching facility in Kota, expressed apprehension about prolonged decision-making timelines among prospective students. This hesitation could subsequently reduce enrollment figures.

“Over the last couple of years, at most a lakh of students came to Kota to prepare for engineering and medical entrance tests. I expect the numbers to be around 70,000-80,000 this year. The drop will be because of the hesitancy amongst ‘repeat’ students, who may not want to come to Kota again and prepare,” Maheshwari told Mint.

Within the coaching sector terminology, “repeat” candidates refer to individuals seeking another opportunity to achieve higher scores, potentially securing positions in government institutions that charge considerably lower tuition compared to private establishments.

Broader Context of Student Protests

These local concerns surface against a backdrop of nationwide demonstrations questioning the administration of NEET-UG, a pivotal examination for undergraduate medical admissions. Educators note that approximately sixty percent of Kota’s student population arrives for medical preparation, while engineering aspirants sit for the Joint Entrance Examination.

Admissions remain vital for Kota’s economy. Recent years have witnessed enrollment decline from 200,000 in 2022, attributed to coaching centers establishing satellite locations in other urban areas and reputational damage following student suicides linked to academic pressure.

“Having clarity on current exam prospects is an important part of the students’ decision-making framework when deciding to prepare in the coming year,” said Allen Career Institute, one of the most prominent coaching centres in Kota in response to Mint’s queries.

Allen Career Institute further noted that student enthusiasm remained steady despite the supplementary NEET examination. This second attempt occurred on June 21, following the cancellation of the initial May 3 test due to leak allegations. Approximately 2.2 million candidates participate in this medical entrance assessment annually.

Early Enrollment Indicators

Allen Career Institute acknowledged that direct year-over-year comparisons remain challenging since admissions continue and the timeline has extended. Nevertheless, preliminary data suggests total enrollments sit slightly above previous year levels at this stage.

Not everyone shares this optimistic perspective. A senior executive at a major test preparation company indicated that NEET enrollments in Kota are marginally below 2025 figures and likely comparable to last year’s numbers, despite overall national growth.

“A lot depends on how the government will address the concerns of the students. There are about 4,000 hostels in Kota and a large number of them depend on ‘repeat’ students. We are all on wait and watch mode,” said Naveen Mittal, president of the Hostel Association of Kota.

Financial commitments for families typically include annual coaching fees ranging from ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000, alongside monthly hostel charges between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000. Repeat students often receive reduced rates, intensifying competitive pricing among institutions.

Shifting Student Preferences

A local educator identified an emerging pattern: students increasingly favor engineering programs over medical courses. Traditional enrollment ratios hovered around 60:40 in favor of NEET candidates, but this year’s figures approach parity.

“Traditionally, institutes have around a 60:40 mix—60% NEET students and 40% JEE students. This year, however, the ratio is closer to 50:50,” said the senior faculty in one of the top three coaching institutes in the city.

This faculty member also highlighted limited educational alternatives perceived by families. Despite vocal protests regarding NEET challenges, students recognize few viable options beyond engineering and medicine. India currently offers approximately 1.36 lakh medical positions and 1.98 lakh engineering seats.

Education specialists attribute the current situation to student indecisiveness, suggesting that Kota’s admission impact will remain temporary as the situation evolves.
