Monsoon Impact and Casualties

Theindiapostdaily.com – Heavy monsoon rains have triggered a series of incidents across Thane district, resulting in three fatalities and the displacement of almost 800 individuals. Officials reported on Thursday that a recent lightning strike caused injuries to two people, as per PTI. This brings the total number of casualties this season to three deaths and 11 injuries.

“The fatalities include one individual each from Thane city, Ambernath, and Mira Bhayander,” said an official release cited by PTI. The district administration noted that the accidents have occurred across various locations, with the rainwater causing significant disruptions.

Lightning Strike in Murbad

A lightning strike occurred in Murbad taluka on Wednesday, injuring two individuals, including a teenage girl. Tehsildar Abhijit Deshmukh shared that both victims were transported to the Tokawde Primary Health Centre and are currently stable, according to PTI.

“Two persons were affected by the lightning strike,” Deshmukh stated. The incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by extreme weather conditions in the region.

Drowning Incidents and Search Operations

Separate incidents involving drowning have left two boys missing. One boy was swept away by a river in Bhiwandi on 5 July, while another disappeared in a nallah on 6 July. Search efforts for both remain active, as reported by PTI.

“The body of an unidentified man was recovered from the Potgaon river in Murbad,” the report added. Authorities are still working to confirm his identity, with the post-mortem process underway.

Evacuations and Infrastructure Damage

Torrential rains have caused extensive damage, prompting emergency teams to relocate 797 people from 229 families to safer zones. The heavy downpours also led to the destruction of 136 houses, either partially or entirely. Additional losses include five huts, two poultry farms, a community hall, and an Anganwadi centre.

Preventing Flooding in Kalwa’s Adarsh Chawl

Authorities in Kalwa acted quickly to prevent flooding in the Adarsh Chawl area after heavy torrents threatened to wash away the locality. A spot inspection revealed that debris had clogged natural drainage channels and nallahs, causing water to overflow into nearby homes, as stated in an official release.

“The Thane Municipal Corporation deployed personnel to clear the blocked drains,” PTI reported. This intervention restored the flow of hill torrents and diverted water safely into the main city drainage system. No structural damage or financial loss was reported in the affected area.
