Who Is Pralhad Joshi?

Pralhad Joshi is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader hailing from Karnataka. He has represented the Dharwad constituency for five consecutive terms, establishing himself as one of the BJP’s most experienced parliamentarians. His extensive political career has seen him handle multiple critical ministerial portfolios throughout his tenure in the Union government.

Before assuming responsibility for the Education Ministry, Joshi served as the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. He also held charge of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, where he played a pivotal role in advancing India’s clean energy objectives. His experience spans across diverse sectors, making him well-suited for the additional educational responsibilities.

In the previous Modi government administration, Joshi managed the Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios. His parliamentary journey from Dharwad has made him one of the longest-serving MPs from Karnataka in the Lok Sabha. “President Droupadi Murmu, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers,” the government stated in its official press release.

The ministry is working toward achieving 500 GW of renewable and non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030. Additionally, the country aims to reach net zero emissions by 2070 under his leadership.

Under Joshi’s guidance, the ministry has pursued several strategic measures including annual bids for 50 GW of renewable energy projects until 2027. These initiatives encompass waivers on Inter-State Transmission System charges, expansion of Renewable Purchase Obligations, development of large renewable energy parks, and viability gap funding for offshore wind projects. He has also overseen major programmes such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the PM Surya Ghar initiative.
