India’s Fuel Prices Stable Amid Global Oil Price Fluctuations

Theindiapostdaily.com – On June 26, fuel prices in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru remained unchanged despite a slight decline in international oil benchmarks. The easing of supply-related tensions contributed to the steady pricing, according to recent reports.

Global Market Developments

Global oil prices saw a modest drop on Friday, with Brent crude futures falling 0.25% to $75.07 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate plunging 0.18% to $71.79 per barrel. Reuters noted this decline as markets processed renewed concerns over the Strait of Hormuz.

“Crude shipments through the Strait reached a record high this week, following the resumption of traffic after a ceasefire agreement in February,” reported Bloomberg.

Earlier in the week, oil prices rebounded after a cargo ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, reigniting fears about the safety of maritime routes. This incident caused a temporary spike in supply worries, prompting a shift in commercial vessel movements.

Regional Impact and Policy Context

India’s retail fuel prices have not yet reflected the recent global adjustments, staying aligned with the last revision on May 25. State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) had previously raised prices, leading to a cumulative increase of ₹7.50 for petrol and ₹7.60 for diesel per litre over the past month.

Despite ongoing volatility in global markets, the Indian fuel pricing mechanism continues to mirror pre-revision levels. Analysts suggest this stability is due to the OMCs maintaining their pricing strategies in the face of international uncertainty.

Security Concerns and Strategic Routes

The attack on the vessel near the Strait of Hormuz raised alarms, with the International Maritime Organization halting evacuation operations in the region on Thursday. The UN body cited fresh doubts about normalized shipping flows, Bloomberg noted.

“Security for vessels outside designated Hormuz routes is not assured,” stated the Persian Gulf Strait Authority in Iran, highlighting the strategic importance of the waterway.

Two key transit corridors have emerged through the Strait—one near Iran and another close to Oman’s coast, which is protected by U.S. forces. This division underscores the geopolitical dynamics affecting maritime safety.

Dennis Kissler, a senior vice president at BOK Financial Securities Inc, described the attack as a “short-covering move” that triggered a market correction. “In an oversold market, prices may stabilize before new selling pressures emerge,” he added, per Bloomberg.
