The alert also extends to Palghar and Thane districts on the same day. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in the Greater Mumbai region and issued a high tide alert, anticipating a 4.19-meter surge on July 5th, expected to peak at 3:22 PM.

Rescheduled Trains and Cancellations

Due to adverse weather and a major blockage, several Mumbai-bound trains scheduled for July 5th have been rescheduled or cancelled. Central Railway announced on X that a large-scale disruption will occur between Kurla and Vashi on both up and down Harbour lines from 11:10 AM to 4:10 PM to conduct maintenance and engineering work. During this period, some suburban services on the Harbour line will be suspended, while special services will run between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus–Kurla and Vashi–Panvel. The Main line will not face this blockage.

Flight Delays and Road Closures

Heavy rains on July 4th caused five Mumbai-bound flights to be diverted, with three operated by IndiGo and two by Air India affected. Key roads were shut due to waterlogging and related incidents, including Andheri Subway (D.N.Nagar), Malad Subway South and North Bound, J Tata Road Near Star Bajar (Marine Drive), and Rolta Junction (MIDC area), among others. The Mumbai Traffic Police advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor updates closely.

At 10:40 AM, IndiGo issued a travel advisory, noting that flight operations are impacted by the severe weather in Mumbai. Akasa Air similarly warned on X that heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Goa may cause delays across its network. By 9:50 AM, visuals of Mumbai’s Marine Drive flooded the social media feeds, showcasing the intensity of the downpours.

Rescue Teams Deployed for Heavy Rain Response

“Citizens should remain vigilant and only step out of their homes if absolutely necessary. Furthermore, they should strictly follow the instructions issued from time to time by the administration. In case of an emergency, immediately contact the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s helpline number 1916 for assistance.”

State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan emphasized the need for caution, stating, “More than 200mm rain has occurred in 12 hours, which is very heavy rain—for Mumbai, it is very heavy rain. I would request all tourists, people who are going out for sightseeing… Places with tourism witness high casualties. Only step out of the house if there is urgent work,” according to ANI.

The railway ministry delayed the formal launch of tunnel-boring work for the bullet train project, citing the adverse weather conditions. A senior official noted, “Considering the intense rainfall since Saturday night, we have decided to postpone the formal launch by the Hon’ble Railway Minister of the underground tunnel boring work using tunnel boring machines for the first time on the bullet train project.”

Latest Updates from IMD and BMC

At 11:00 AM, IMD extended the red alert for Mumbai and Raigad districts, with the warning for intense rain and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph set to remain in effect until 1:00 PM. BMC’s advisory reiterated the importance of staying alert, urging residents to avoid risks like sitting near high tides or taking selfies in flood-prone areas.

As of 8:30 AM, the DRM Mumbai CR reported over 250-300 mm of rainfall in certain parts of the city over the past 23 hours. This led to the cancellation of the CSMT-Pune Deccan Express (train number 11007) and the rescheduling of the CSMT-MAS EXP (train number 22159).
