Jharkhand Recruitment Row: New Dialogue Set for August 17 as Protesters Hold Firm

Theindiapostdaily.com – The state government in Jharkhand has extended an invitation to demonstrators challenging alleged malpractice in public-sector hiring tests, proposing a new round of negotiations on August 17. According to PTI reporting, student representatives confirmed they would show up at the sit-down but insisted their legal counsel accompany them and that none of their core grievances would be dropped.

The announcement landed as the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch-led agitation crossed its 22nd consecutive day. At the heart of the unrest is a sustained push for greater openness and structural overhaul of how the state conducts its recruitment examinations.

Protesters’ Core Demands

Demonstrators are calling for outright cancellation of specific tests they believe were compromised — notably the JSSC-CGL examination along with select JPSC papers. They further insist on an independent investigation conducted either by the Central Bureau of Investigation or a panel drawn from retired judges outside the state.

In a more pointed escalation, student groups had earlier declared their intention to surround Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s official residence on August 20, pressing for his resignation and charging the JMM-Congress ruling alliance with inaction on their grievances. They also announced plans to set fire to effigies of both Soren and Congress president Rahul Gandhi across every one of the state’s 24 districts on Sunday, while urging Gandhi to pull Congress backing from the JMM-led coalition should the chief minister continue to ignore their concerns.

“We demanded CM Hemant Soren’s resignation as the government failed to cancel JSSC-CGL and the JPSC examinations in which irregularities were found,” a student leader told PTI.

Critics within the movement also took aim at Gandhi, arguing that his public expressions of solidarity amounted to empty gestures devoid of tangible follow-through. Organisers reiterated that the agitation would persist until every demand was met.

Soren’s Independence Day Pledge on Reform

In his annual Independence Day address, Soren conceded that lingering doubts around hiring examinations had eroded the confidence of an entire cohort of job seekers. He pledged that any confirmed irregularity would be examined without bias and that those found culpable would face full legal consequences regardless of rank or clout, while cautioning against presuming guilt absent proof.

Rather than limiting its response to individual punishments, the administration outlined a broader reform agenda: a fixed annual examination timetable, technology-backed test delivery, prompt release of answer keys and OMR sheets, and layered accountability checkpoints embedded throughout the recruitment pipeline. The state simultaneously rolled out a “Students’ Voice with Students” initiative soliciting input from students, faculty members, education specialists, and parents on reshaping the examination framework.

Thousands of aspirants took part in a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ through Ranchi on Saturday to coincide with Independence Day, using the occasion to amplify calls for transparency in the hiring-test ecosystem.

Opposition Presses for External Probe

Former chief minister and BJP legislator Champai Soren levelled sharp criticism at the current administration’s handling of the crisis, singling out what he described as an inexplicable hesitation to invite a CBI inquiry.

“If you are not a part of a job-selling racket, what is the problem in recommending a CBI probe?” Champai Soren said.

Mahto Fast and Hospital Standoff

JLKM chief Devendra Mahto, who has been on a hunger strike for 14 days, alleged that police blocked his departure from Sadar Hospital so he could join the students’ march. Footage apparently capturing him in a physical altercation with security staff as he attempted to exit the facility spread widely across social media platforms.

Organisers of the movement stressed that their cause transcends any single examination cycle, framing it instead as a fight for the integrity of Jharkhand’s entire public-recruitment apparatus and the livelihood prospects of thousands of young aspirants.
