The Union health minister conducted a thorough assessment of preparedness measures during a high-level meeting with officials from the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This strategic review addresses critical concerns raised by students and parents nationwide regarding transparency and efficiency in the admission system.

The timing of this review proves particularly significant following widespread student protests demanding structural changes. These demonstrations gained momentum after a major question paper leak compromised the integrity of the examination. The controversy ultimately resulted in Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as Union education minister, highlighting the government’s commitment to accountability. Nadda directed all concerned officials to implement proactive measures that would directly address candidates’ grievances and concerns.

Streamlined admission framework and digital transformation

The health ministry outlined an ambitious reform package aimed at reducing administrative delays and improving accessibility for all applicants. A central component involves implementing a simplified one-time physical reporting framework combined with comprehensive online document verification. Under this innovative system, candidates who receive seat allotments can submit their preferences entirely through digital channels without requiring physical presence at multiple locations.

Students opting for the ‘Float’ option, which allows them to pursue better seats in subsequent rounds through Round 3, can now verify documents and secure provisional admission online. This eliminates the need for candidates to travel to educational institutions, surrender original documents, or pay admission fees until their final seat allotment receives confirmation. The streamlined process extends to seat surrender capabilities, enabling students to relinquish allotted positions directly through the official portal.

“The government is fully committed to ensuring a fair, merit-based, and transparent admission process for all NEET UG 2026 candidates,” stated the health ministry in its official communication regarding the reforms.

Significant improvements have been made for students with benchmark disabilities, with designated evaluation centres expanding from 16 to 61 locations across the country. Following National Medical Commission guidelines, evaluation boards will now issue eligibility certificates based on practical abilities rather than solely on documentation. A newly created appeal board will handle contested decisions, providing additional recourse for candidates.

The admission workflow benefits from automatic data sharing between the National Testing Agency and counselling authorities, alongside complete digitization of registrations for non-resident Indian applicants. To support candidates throughout the process, the health ministry launched a 24×7 toll-free helpline operating at 1800-102-7637 and established a dedicated grievance email address at mcc2026@gov.in for addressing queries.

The counselling rollout follows an exceptionally turbulent period for competitive examinations in India. NEET UG 2026, conducted on 3 May and attempted by more than 2.2 million students, faced cancellation due to the paper leak incident. A re-examination subsequently took place on 21 June with nearly 2 million candidates participating, with official results declared on 16 July.
