Kalyan’s remarks were made during the launch of the Viksit Bharat-Jee Ram Ji (VB-G RAM G) initiative in Tirupati, a government project aimed at fostering national development and citizen engagement. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also present at the event, underscoring the political significance of the moment. “Freedom of speech and expression is a fundamental right, but it must be exercised within the legal framework,” Kalyan noted, pointing to the growing misuse of social media as a tool for spreading misinformation and targeting individuals with personal vendettas.

He criticized the rise of fake accounts and organized online harassment, which he argued are undermining public discourse. “Freedom of speech doesn’t extend to character assassination or defaming people, especially women and children,” he added, citing the recent complaints against individuals who shared offensive posts about his daughters. “Article 19, clause 2 of the constitution allows reasonable restrictions in the interest of sovereignty, integrity, public order, and preventing defamation,” Kalyan explained. “The government has the responsibility to protect citizens from the negative consequences of unchecked freedom of speech, especially when it leads to harassment and harm.”

Authorities have registered multiple cases against individuals from Pithapuram and Eluru for allegedly posting objectionable material on social media. The investigations, initiated after complaints about the targeted abuse, are focusing on identifying the accounts responsible for spreading defamatory content. Kalyan’s statement aligns with efforts to curb online misconduct, as legal frameworks are being used to address the growing issue of digital bullying.

Social media activist Prashna Ravan, who was detained for alleged disparaging comments, recently received bail from a local court in Pithapuram. However, she was re-arrested in connection with a separate case filed at the Sarpavaram police station in Kakinada district. This highlights the complexity of balancing free expression with the need to prevent harm, as seen in the ongoing legal battles surrounding online abuse.

In a video shared by the Jana Sena Party on X, Kalyan reiterated his call for responsible use of freedom of speech. “Today, I want to address an issue that affects every citizen: the way social media is being used to spread hate and target loved ones,” he said. “While freedom of speech is essential, it must not be a shield for personal or political attacks that damage reputations and incite fear.”
