The airline has lowered fuel surcharges on select international routes, following a decline in global jet fuel prices. This change, reported by ANI, is a first for an Indian carrier to directly respond to market-driven fuel cost trends.
Effective from April, Air India has adjusted fuel surcharges for routes to Europe, North America, and other international destinations. The surcharge for flights to Europe has been reduced from USD 205 to USD 125, while routes to North America and select other regions now carry a surcharge of USD 200, down from USD 280 earlier in the year. These changes aim to ease the financial strain on passengers and make long-haul travel more affordable.
The decision to cut fuel surcharges follows a period of sharp increases in jet fuel prices. By March 27, 2026, the global average jet fuel price hit USD 195.19 per barrel, nearly doubling from USD 99.40 per barrel in late February. This surge was driven by a rise in the crack spread, which climbed from USD 27.83 to USD 81.44 during the same timeframe. Now, as prices stabilize, Air India is sharing some of the savings with customers on key international routes.
Strategic Pricing Move and Market Response
The airline’s move is expected to modestly lower travel expenses for flights to Europe and North America. Industry analysts suggest that this adjustment could encourage more demand for international travel, particularly in sectors like business and tourism. With fuel prices easing, Air India’s pricing strategy aligns with broader industry efforts to offer more competitive rates while maintaining operational efficiency.
Customers traveling to Europe and North America will benefit from the reduced surcharge, which directly impacts ticket prices. While the changes are not comprehensive, they signal a shift toward more flexible pricing models. Collaboration with SIA Engineering to Strengthen MRO Infrastructure
Meanwhile, Air India has announced a new collaboration with Singapore-based SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC) to bolster its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Mumbai, aims to integrate SIAEC’s technical expertise with Air India’s growing operational footprint, enhancing service efficiency for flights to Europe and North America.
“This partnership builds on our existing collaboration and leverages SIAEC’s technical know-how alongside our growing operational footprint,” stated Air India’s CEO and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson.
The agreement is designed to position India as a more competitive MRO hub, supporting both domestic and regional aviation markets. This development is part of Air India’s broader strategy to improve service quality and reduce costs, which includes adjustments to fuel surcharges on flights to Europe and North America.
With this third major partnership in less than a year, Air India continues to strengthen its technical infrastructure. The MoU follows previous agreements, including a 12-year Inventory Technical Management (ITM) deal in February 2024 and the appointment of SIAEC as a strategic partner for maintenance facilities in Bengaluru. These efforts are expected to create long-term value for airlines operating in the Asia-Pacific and European regions, further solidifying India’s role in global aviation logistics.
