‘A hero of our times’: Mankind Pharma to give ₹1 crore to FlyDubai Capt Smit Machchhar

Mankind Pharma Announces ₹1 Crore Support for FlyDubai Captain Smit Machchhar

Theindiapostdaily.com – Mankind Pharma has said it will contribute ₹1 crore to FlyDubai Captain Smit Machchhar and his family, honouring the courage and leadership he displayed during a crisis aboard a flight travelling from the UAE to Israel.

The company shared the announcement on LinkedIn, accompanied by a letter from Vice Chairman and Managing Director Rajeev Juneja. Mankind Pharma described the contribution as a gesture of gratitude for Machchhar’s actions during an incident in which the safety of passengers and crew depended on rapid decisions under intense pressure.

“Some acts of courage stay with an entire nation.”

In its post, the pharmaceutical company said Captain Machchhar remained composed in an extraordinary emergency and prioritised the people on board. It said his conduct had made the country proud and called the financial contribution a modest way to express appreciation.

A Decision to Turn Admiration Into Action

Juneja said the company’s decision reflected its view that recognition should go beyond public praise. He wrote that moments of exceptional bravery often leave people with a choice: they can allow their emotional response to fade, or they can translate it into meaningful support.

“When we witness an act of extraordinary courage and our hearts are filled with pride, we have a choice: let that emotion pass with time, or turn it into meaningful action.”

After learning about the captain’s actions, Mankind Pharma chose to stand with him and his family, Juneja said. The ₹1 crore contribution was intended to demonstrate that the company’s admiration was backed by a tangible commitment.

“Because emotions fade, but actions leave a lasting impact.”

The announcement highlights a broader public response to acts of courage in high-risk situations. While appreciation can bring immediate recognition, practical assistance can provide a more enduring sign of solidarity with those who have faced danger while protecting others.

Letter Praises Leadership Under Pressure

In his letter to Machchhar, Juneja called the pilot “a hero of our times” and said his calmness, courage and responsibility had resonated with people in India and elsewhere. He emphasised that leadership becomes most visible when events take an unexpected and dangerous turn.

“A leader is not tested when everything is going well. The real test comes in a moment of extreme crisis, when fear is natural, pressure is immense, and the lives of so many people depend on your decisions.”

Juneja said Machchhar had acted with the welfare of the crew and passengers in mind, accepting responsibility for the lives placed in his care. He added that the amount offered by the company could not measure the value of the lives protected or the impact of the example set during the incident.

The letter described the contribution as a small expression of respect, gratitude and admiration. It ended by thanking the captain for placing others before himself and for demonstrating the importance of humanity in the most difficult moments.

“No amount of money can ever equal the value of the lives you protected or the inspiration you have given to millions.”

What Happened on the FlyDubai Flight

The incident occurred on a FlyDubai flight travelling from the UAE to Israel on Wednesday. Captain Machchhar was stabbed with a knife by his co-pilot in what appeared to be an attempted hijacking.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar activated the cockpit door release and opened the cockpit door. That action enabled crew members and passengers to enter the area and overpower the attacker.

The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers, was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The episode drew attention not only because of the apparent attack in the cockpit, but also because of the coordinated response that followed once access to the cockpit was made possible.

For passengers, a cockpit emergency is among the most alarming situations imaginable, as flight crews are responsible for maintaining control of the aircraft while also managing immediate threats. The actions attributed to Machchhar placed him at the centre of an incident in which swift judgment and personal resolve were critical.

Prime Minister Modi Speaks With Machchhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Captain Machchhar by telephone on Friday. During the conversation, the Prime Minister praised the pilot’s courage and presence of mind during the emergency.

The call added to the public recognition of Machchhar’s conduct, while Mankind Pharma’s ₹1 crore announcement brought a financial dimension to that appreciation. The company said its intention was to support both the captain and his family while acknowledging the responsibility he carried during the crisis.

Machchhar’s experience has become a reminder of the extraordinary demands that can suddenly be placed on aviation professionals. Beyond the routine discipline of operating an aircraft, moments of crisis can require crews to make immediate choices with the lives of many people at stake.

Through its statement and Juneja’s letter, Mankind Pharma framed its contribution as an effort to ensure that the response to such courage does not remain limited to words. The company’s message was clear: Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions deserve lasting recognition, and his decision to put passengers and colleagues first remains a powerful example of responsibility under pressure.
