How quitting a government job for IIM Ahmedabad cost this man ₹74 lakh
India’s government jobs are traditionally seen as a cornerstone of career stability
The Financial Trade-off of Transitioning from a Government Career to IIM Ahmedabad
How quitting a government job for IIM – India’s government jobs are traditionally seen as a cornerstone of career stability, offering consistent income and long-term security. Yet, for Amit Soni, the decision to step away from his role as an SSB Assistant Commandant on the Indo-Nepal Border was a calculated risk that came with a hefty price. His journey, now shared online, highlights a total financial impact of nearly ₹74 lakh.
A High Stakes Decision
In a viral Instagram video, Soni revealed that abandoning his government post to enroll in the one-year Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX) at IIM Ahmedabad meant sacrificing a year of steady earnings and benefits. He emphasized, ” ₹74 Lakhs. That’s what it cost me to quit a government job — the same day I got into IIM Ahmedabad.”
Calculating the Total Cost
Soni detailed how the figure was derived, combining direct and indirect expenses. The program fee at IIM Ahmedabad alone accounted for ₹37.10 lakh, while an international immersion module added an estimated ₹4.5 lakh. Living costs during the academic year were approximately ₹2.5 lakh.
Resigning from his position also required a bond payment of ₹9.80 lakh. The largest hidden cost, he explained, was the loss of a year’s salary and associated benefits, which he valued at ₹20 lakh. Together, these elements formed the total financial burden of his career shift.
Why He Made the Move
Despite the substantial outlay, Soni expressed no regret. “Just conviction,” he wrote, before concluding, “Is it worth it? Absolutely yes.” He framed the decision as an investment in personal and professional transformation, bridging the gap between service and strategy.
In another part of the post, he reflected, “Because some investments aren’t measured in lakhs — they’re measured in who you become on the other side. Uniform to boardroom. Service to strategy. This is just chapter two.” His words have sparked discussions about the balance between financial security and career growth.
Government Jobs and the Pursuit of Progress
India’s government roles remain highly competitive, with millions vying for a limited number of positions. Soni’s choice to prioritize growth over comfort has drawn attention, especially since he had previously discussed the decision in a separate video.
His latest post has reignited conversations about the value of higher education, the sacrifices made for advancement, and the broader appeal of pursuing ambition over tradition in career paths.
