Man Accused of $37 Billion LA Fire Claims Innocence, Lawyer Asserts

Man Accused of 37 Billion LA Fire – Jonathan Rinderknecht, an Uber driver from Los Angeles, is facing arson charges for the catastrophic Palisades Fire, which caused over $37 billion in economic losses. His defense attorney, Steve Haney, argued during the trial’s opening that the accusations against his client are unfounded.

Defense Challenges Evidence Against Rinderknecht

At the start of the federal trial, Haney insisted there’s no evidence Jonathan Rinderknecht ignited the fire. “The proof will show panic, confusion, and a frightened young man repeatedly calling for help,” he stated, emphasizing that the fire was reported by Rinderknecht as a concerned citizen just after midnight on New Year’s Day 2025.

“There won’t be any proof that Jonathan Rinderknecht started that fire,” Haney said. “The evidence will show panic, it will show confusion, it will show a frightened young man repeatedly and desperately calling for help from the hillside.”

Prosecution Presents Surveillance and Cell Phone Data

Assistant US Attorney Matthew O’Brien outlined the government’s case, claiming Rinderknecht hiked to Hidden Buddha Hill—a location above affluent neighborhoods—and intentionally set a blaze using a barbecue lighter. Surveillance footage and cell phone tracking data were used to place him at the fire’s origin, according to prosecutors.

“Investigators had traced Rinderknecht’s movements while he used his cell phone,” O’Brien stated. “The data placed him at the spot where investigators later concluded was the fire’s point of origin.”

Fire’s Impact and Financial Toll

The Palisades Fire, initially contained on Jan. 1, 2025, allegedly reignited due to hurricane-force winds on Jan. 7. This led to a massive conflagration that destroyed or damaged nearly 8,000 structures and claimed at least 12 lives. Insured losses were estimated at $23 billion, while total economic damage reached $37 billion, according to Gallagher Re.

Scapegoat or Intentional Act?

Rinderknecht, who lived in the area, was working as an Uber driver and had dropped off a passenger near the fire’s starting point, the government stated. Haney countered that his client was unfairly targeted, suggesting the fire’s resurgence was due to firefighters’ failure to fully extinguish it. The defense also highlighted Rinderknecht’s emotional state, citing his alleged resentment toward the wealthy.

“He responded it would be out of resentment of the rich enjoying their money as ‘we’re basically being enslaved by them,’” prosecutors said, noting passengers described him as agitated during the New Year’s Eve event.

Forensic Clues and AI Evidence

Prosecutors revealed that Rinderknecht’s computer showed growing anger toward society and a fixation on Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate linked to a high-profile shooting in Manhattan in December 2024. However, US District Judge Anne Hwang excluded evidence deemed irrelevant or inflammatory, including a firefighter’s testimony about being ordered to leave the fire’s origin area and AI-generated images of the city in flames.

“The ChatGPT imagery is very, very prejudicial,” Haney argued, while the government claimed the AI visuals were part of Rinderknecht’s premeditated plan.

Charges and Trial Outlook

Rinderknecht is charged with three counts, including destruction of property by fire, arson affecting property used in interstate commerce, and setting timber ablaze. The trial, expected to last about 10 days, could result in up to 45 years in prison if he is convicted. The case is titled US v Rinderknecht, 25-cr-833, in the Central District of California (Los Angeles).
