India’s Push for a Safer Digital Landscape: Over 50 OTT Services Restricted

Theindiapostdaily.com – India’s administration has taken decisive action to enhance online security and protect younger users by restricting access to more than fifty over-the-top (OTT) services within a two-year span. These restrictions stem from violations of the Information Technology Act, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to digital well-being and child safety, according to ANI.

Policy Framework and Legislative Updates

In a formal written response delivered to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwani Vaishnaw outlined the nation’s vision for internet governance. He emphasized that current strategies focus on cultivating an environment that is open, trustworthy, and accountable for all users, with special attention to children.

Recent modifications to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media) regulations, enacted in 2021, have tightened compliance requirements. Social media networks and other intermediaries must now eliminate content deemed inappropriate or obscene within three hours of receiving directives from relevant government bodies.

Furthermore, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 represents another milestone in securing user data. This legislation requires parental approval before processing personal information belonging to minors. It also bans certain commercial activities aimed at children, including behavioral tracking, continuous monitoring, and personalized advertising campaigns.

Addressing Digital Addiction Among Youth

The ministry pointed to the Economic Survey 2025-26, which characterizes digital addiction as a critical public health concern primarily affecting young people. This issue carries significant weight because it influences multiple aspects of development, including cognitive growth, mental wellness, academic results, workplace efficiency, and financial stability.

To combat this trend, the government introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, as a targeted intervention measure.

Expanding Cyber Awareness Initiatives

Beyond regulatory changes, substantial efforts have been made to educate the public about cybersecurity. The administration reported conducting 6,650 Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) workshops, engaging over 11.37 lakh attendees. These participants included educators, law enforcement personnel, government staff, and students.

Additionally, awareness programs are being integrated into educational frameworks managed by CERT-In, CBSE, and NCERT to foster safer online habits among adolescents across the country.
