Theindiapostdaily.com – On Tuesday, an ICE officer in Houston fatally shot a Mexican national after he tried to avoid arrest during a targeted enforcement operation, the agency reported. The incident occurred at approximately 6:50 AM CT, with federal agents attempting to stop the individual’s vehicle as part of a broader effort to apprehend an undocumented immigrant, according to a spokesperson.
The Department of Homeland Security identified the deceased as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen living in the U.S. without legal permission. ICE stated that Araujo evaded capture by ramming an agent, prompting the use of lethal force. The man’s car collided with an ICE vehicle during the encounter, the department added.
“The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—an illegal alien from Mexico—attempted to evade arrest,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.
The FBI’s Houston field office is investigating whether the officer was assaulted during the operation. Connor Hagan, a spokesperson, noted that the evidence response team also attended the scene at DHS’s request to process the area.
Rep. Garcia Calls for Independent Review
Democratic US Rep. Sylvia Garcia mentioned the incident took place in her district, stating that ICE released an initial account of events. She argued that the information requires independent verification and a thorough investigation.
“All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation,” she said.
This incident marks the sixth fatal shooting by federal agents since the Trump administration escalated immigration enforcement measures. In 2025, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was killed by an immigration agent during a late-night traffic stop. A grand jury later declined to charge the officer, citing that he fired after the driver “intentionally ran over” another agent. Video footage of the encounter did not clearly show the vehicle hitting the agent.
Additionally, in January 2026, Renee Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot in the head by an ICE agent during a Minneapolis crackdown. DHS claimed Good was attempting to strike the officer with her car, but local officials and witnesses disputed this, stating she was only trying to drive away.
