India-EU Target Final Legal Review of FTA Text by 15-20 Days

Theindiapostdaily.com – Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has outlined that India and the European Union are set to finalize the legal review of their proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) text within the next 15 to 20 days. This marks a critical phase in the development of the historic trade pact, which is approaching the final steps before official signing, as reported by PTI.

“Goyal expressed confidence that the agreement remains on track to be signed by the end of this year, with implementation expected in the first quarter of 2027 after the necessary approvals are secured,” stated PTI.

The legal review process entails a thorough examination of the negotiated terms to ensure alignment with the legal frameworks of both India and the EU, eliminate uncertainties, and guarantee consistency across the agreement. Once this stage is completed, the document will proceed to formal signing and ratification.

India and the European Union have been engaged in FTA talks for years, framing it as a strategic initiative to bolster sustained economic collaboration. Recent advancements in resolving key disputes have expedited the negotiations, with the current legal assessment representing the last technical hurdle prior to the pact’s formal adoption.

A Major Step in Bilateral Trade Relations

The India-EU FTA is considered one of the country’s most pivotal trade agreements, given the EU’s status as a major trading partner. PTI highlighted that the agreement is anticipated to enhance market access for Indian products and services, promote foreign investment, and fortify supply chains across multiple industries.

Furthermore, the pact is expected to reduce trade obstacles, create more export prospects, and simplify entry for Indian firms into the European market. Its scope will encompass diverse areas such as goods and services trade, investment, regulatory collaboration, and other initiatives aimed at deepening economic ties between the two regions.

With negotiations intensifying in recent months, both parties are determined to conclude the legal review within the designated timeframe. Goyal emphasized that the progress is steady, reaffirming their commitment to completing all formal procedures in the coming weeks. This will set the stage for the agreement’s signing later this year and its subsequent enforcement in early 2027.
