Delhi-NCR Anticipates Southwest Monsoon’s Arrival; Forecast Highlights Key Dates

Theindiapostdaily.com – Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have been watching the weather closely, with recent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall sparking optimism about the arrival of the southwest monsoon. This seasonal shift is expected to bring much-needed relief from the prolonged heatwave gripping the area.

Monsoon Advances Beyond Initial Predictions

The southwest monsoon reached Kerala on 4 June, five days ahead of the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s earlier forecast. It then extended to Maharashtra two days later, as reported by the Hindustan Times. The progression of the monsoon has already covered parts of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Goa, sections of Andhra Pradesh, and the southwest Bay of Bengal.

“The monsoon’s advance has been faster than anticipated, with coverage expanding into key regions across the country,” said the IMD in its latest update.

Delhi’s Forecasted Monsoon Window

According to the weather agency’s tracking map, Delhi-NCR is projected to see the monsoon between 25 and 30 June. This timeline aligns with expectations for other northern states to experience similar relief. Once it reaches the capital, the monsoon is expected to move northwest, impacting areas like Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

Rainfall and Temperature Drops

Light to moderate rain in Delhi on Friday triggered a significant drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, saw its minimum temperature fall by 3.7 degrees to 26°C. The maximum temperature also dipped to 35.8°C, which is 4.2 degrees below the seasonal average.

“Friday’s rainfall was a welcome relief, with temperatures dropping sharply in response to the western disturbance,” noted the IMD’s data analysis.

Other locations such as Palam and Lodhi Road recorded similar declines, with Palam’s minimum temperature hitting 22°C—6.2 degrees below normal—and Lodhi Road’s maximum settling at 35.4°C. Ridge, meanwhile, reported a minimum of 23.1°C and a maximum of 35.2°C.

Weekend Weather Outlook

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms and rain for Saturday and Sunday, with the maximum temperature expected to stabilize around 36°C. Earlier on Saturday, Delhi’s minimum temperature was recorded at 26.4°C, 1.2 degrees below the usual seasonal norm.

Monsoon’s Southern Expansion

Looking ahead, the monsoon is forecast to extend further into Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana. It may also reach the remaining regions of Tamil Nadu and spread across the northeastern parts of India. The northern boundary of the monsoon currently passes through Mangalore, Uthagamandalam, Kodaikanal, and Thoothukudi.
