Across key cities, the price of petrol reached ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi, up from ₹99.51. Diesel prices similarly climbed to ₹95.20 per litre in the national capital, up from ₹92.49. The cumulative effect of price increases since May 15 has pushed fuel costs upward by nearly ₹7.5 per litre.
Global Crises and Domestic Impact
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has significantly influenced energy markets, contributing to elevated fuel prices in India. Approximately one-fifth of global oil and gas trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint under Iranian control. This has disrupted supply chains, affecting India’s imports from Gulf nations, which account for 40% of crude, 65% of natural gas, and 90% of LPG needs.
“Oil prices cannot remain at their current height for a very long time and are expected to fall in the months ahead,” said Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. He noted that “enough stocks are available” to manage shortages despite the war, though warned the situation could worsen if hostilities expand.
Analysts suggest the conflict’s impact may ease as new supply routes from Canada and the U.S. are anticipated to offset some of the disruptions. However, uncertainties persist due to conflicting signals between the US and Iran, as reported by Reuters.

Bloomberg reports that crude oil has fallen to its lowest level since March, with Brent futures dropping 3.4% to $87.33, a decline since March 5. West Texas Intermediate also saw a 3.2% drop on Friday, while European gas prices plummeted as much as 8.4%.
Markets anticipate further stabilization as an interim peace agreement nears, potentially reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The deal, expected to be finalized during the Group of Seven summit next week, could ease tensions. However, the report highlights lingering concerns over divergent messaging between the two nations.
