Omani Pilot Used Crash Axe in Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Incident

Theindiapostdaily.com – An Omani pilot used crash axe equipment during an alleged attack on Captain Smit Machchar aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, raising serious questions about cockpit safety and the emergency tools carried on commercial aircraft. The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight was forced into an emergency situation before landing safely in Saudi Arabia.

Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national who was serving as co-pilot, is accused of attacking the Indian captain on September 30. UAE Attorney General Counsellor Hamad Saif al-Shamsi described the episode as an alleged attempt to commit a terrorist act. The allegations remain under investigation.

The confrontation reportedly began around two-and-a-half hours after the Boeing 737 MAX 8 departed Dubai. During the struggle, the aircraft descended sharply, dropping about 16,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds. The autopilot disengaged and the aircraft accelerated before control was restored.

Captain Machchar survived the attack and received medical treatment for his injuries. A reserve pilot who was on board took control of the aircraft, enabling it to divert and land safely in Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot was detained and later transferred to UAE custody.

Why Commercial Aircraft Carry a Crash Axe

The fact that an Omani pilot used crash axe equipment in the alleged attack has brought attention to its intended role. A crash axe is not a routine flying instrument or a weapon issued for security purposes. It is emergency equipment kept in the cockpit for rare situations in which crew members need rapid access to aircraft systems or an obstructed area.

Aviation expert Harsh Vardhan explained that flight decks carry several safety items, including portable fire extinguishers, flashlights, life vests and fire-resistant gloves. These tools are intended to help the crew respond if normal aircraft systems or access points cannot be used.

“In cockpit various safety equipments like Crash Axe, Portable fire extinguisher, Flash Lights, Life vests, Fire proof gloves etc are kept. Usage of these items during emergency varies. Crash Axe is used to open the panel in case of fire in case the electrical system to open door fails or doors are jammed for some reason,” Vardhan stated.

In an emergency, a crash axe may be used to reach areas behind panels when there is a fire, or to gain access if an electrically operated door fails or becomes jammed. Its presence reflects the need for crews to prepare for uncommon but potentially life-threatening mechanical and fire-related incidents.

What Investigators Are Examining

Investigators are examining claims that al-Hammami planned the alleged attack before joining the Dubai government-owned airline. Two Israeli officials familiar with the inquiry said he told UAE investigators that the plan had been formed in advance.

A separate person briefed on the UAE investigation said the co-pilot allegedly intended to crash the September 30 flight into Ben-Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. The same account alleged that he had considered taking control of another Tel Aviv-bound flight earlier in the year but did not proceed.

The reason for abandoning the earlier alleged plan has not been publicly established. According to the person familiar with the inquiry, al-Hammami was believed to know someone travelling on that earlier flight. Authorities have not publicly released all evidence connected to the case.

The incident demonstrates the importance of cockpit procedures, qualified backup crew and coordinated emergency action. Although the Omani pilot used crash axe equipment in the alleged assault, the aircraft was ultimately brought under control and the flight ended without a fatal crash.
