Guthrie, mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, was seized from her northern Tucson residence in the early hours of February 1, after a masked figure appeared on the property’s doorbell camera. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department made the messages public in July — roughly six months after the abduction — and her location remains unknown.

Comma Splices Appear in Both Messages

Among the most telling markers, according to Miller, is the repeated use of comma splices: two independent clauses stitched together with a comma rather than a period. Miller noted the pattern persists across both documents.

“We see it also again in the second note,” Miller was quoted as saying by Fox News. “So it’s continuous between the two notes, which is one of the reasons why I believe this continuity more likely than not indicates this one author.”

Miller argued that making the texts publicly available gives ordinary citizens a chance to spot the writer’s idiosyncratic habits in everyday correspondence — emails, letters, or other written exchanges.

Unusual Spelling and Compound-Word Choices

Beyond punctuation, the investigator flagged several “open compounds” — words conventionally written as one unit or hyphenated that appear split apart in the notes.

“We’re also seeing some open compounds through the notes,” she said. “We see ‘heart related,’ that should be hyphenated by most people when they write that. We see smartwatch written as two words. Most people write that as one. Floodlight, we see that written as words. So that is a continuity that we’re seeing between the two.”

Personal Linguistic Fingerprint, or “Idiolect”

Miller contended the odd phrasing likely reflects the writer’s individual communication habits rather than any external influence. She invoked the concept of idiolect — the personal vocabulary and syntax shaped by region, neighborhood, and adopted slang.

“There’s something else, it’s called idiolect,” Miller explained. “Idiolect is our personal style of communication, and it can be affected by many things. The region we grew up in, neighborhoods we live in, slang that we’ve adopted.”

Specific examples she cited include the choice of “perished” over “died” and the phrase “buried in nature,” both of which she viewed as hallmarks of a particular individual’s voice.

“They blame others,” Miller said. “They blame, you know, the victim themselves. They distance themselves from that bad thing that they did.”

Ransom Formatting and Date Conventions

Miller urged both investigators and members of the public to scrutinize how the monetary demand was expressed — notably the simultaneous use of a dollar sign and the abbreviation “USD” — as well as the formatting of dates and times within the notes.

“I would bring people from the public that are looking at these notes to look at that also, cause that’s a distinction,” she said.

AI Authorship Ruled Out; Authenticity Still Unconfirmed

The investigator did not believe the messages were machine-generated, pointing to a typo and the absence of a uniformly polished cadence as evidence against an AI origin. Authorities have not confirmed the notes are genuine, though they have not dismissed them either. Savannah Guthrie has publicly stated she believes the messages could be authentic.
