“But hearing that so many people had come together, that people were fighting for me, that there were hundreds of messages waiting for me, it gave me something to hold onto. It reminded me that kindness is still real and alive.”

Walia’s friend Liza broke the news on social media, explaining that she had been managing his account during the crisis. According to her post, Walia was seized by agents of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency on the evening of August 2, shortly after he and companions landed back in Los Angeles. His phone and other personal effects were confiscated at the moment of arrest, leaving him without contact for the duration of his hold.

He was subsequently moved to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, where he remained until his release on bond.
