Delhi Expands ₹5 Meal Network with 25 New Atal Canteens
Theindiapostdaily.com – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu jointly inaugurated 25 additional Atal Canteens across the capital, pushing the total number of operational outlets to 100. The new sites were opened on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose name the programme carries as a tribute. At every location, diners can access a meal twice daily at a cost of just ₹5.
A Promise Kept
“A promise to Delhi, delivered. 100 Atal Canteens will now serve nutritious, hygienic meals to nearly 1 lakh people every day for just ₹5. A humble tribute to Atal Ji and a promise to Delhi that no one should sleep hungry and every meal should come with dignity.”
Gupta shared these words in an Instagram post following the ceremony. She framed the expansion as an embodiment of the Antyodaya philosophy and specifically highlighted the canteen situated in the university area, noting it will extend affordable, nutritious food to students in need.
Naidu praised the initiative, underscoring its goal of reaching the poor, slum dwellers, daily-wage workers, and migrants who arrive in Delhi seeking employment.
Scale of Impact
Each of the 100 canteens is designed to dispense roughly 1,000 meals per day, targeting labourers, low-income households, and other vulnerable groups. At full capacity, the network can feed approximately one lakh individuals daily and around 3.65 crore people annually. Since the programme’s inception on 25 December of the previous year, roughly 95 lakh subsidised meals have already been distributed. The annual throughput potential exceeds three and a half crore meals.
