The South is expected to see triple-digit heat through at least Sunday, while St. Louis is forecast to reach 99F (37C). The city remains under a heat advisory through late Saturday, with temperatures roughly 18F above the usual level for this point in the year.
High temperatures increase the burden on the electricity system in several ways. Homes, offices and businesses run cooling systems longer, while heat can also reduce the efficiency of certain equipment and place added strain on transmission infrastructure. The result is a difficult balance: power producers must meet sharply higher demand even as some facilities are unavailable for planned work.
Maintenance Outages Meet Rising Consumption
MISO, which operates a large portion of the central US grid, listed about 51 gigawatts of generation outages on Thursday. At the same time, electricity demand in its territory is projected to climb to 105.2 gigawatts.
A neighboring system operated by PJM Interconnection LLC is confronting similar pressure. PJM covers a broad area that includes Chicago, Washington, DC, and Virginia’s Data Center Alley. The grid operator issued an alert that reserve supplies were tight in certain locations and instructed some large non-residential users to reduce their electricity consumption.
PJM expects demand to exceed 132 gigawatts, while close to 37 gigawatts of generating capacity is offline. Officials asked the US Department of Energy on Wednesday to relax certain emissions requirements, allowing plants to operate at maximum output when needed. On Thursday, the department also approved the use of backup generation resources to help prevent potential shortfalls.
Reserve power is the extra generation capacity held in case demand suddenly rises or a large power plant unexpectedly goes out of service. When those reserves become limited, operators may seek voluntary reductions from major customers, delay maintenance, activate backup resources or take emergency steps to keep the grid balanced.
Wholesale Prices Reflect Tight Conditions
The strain was visible in electricity markets as well. Spot power prices at the benchmark Western hub in the nation’s largest grid rose above $4,300 per megawatt-hour shortly after 6 p.m. local time Wednesday.
Elevated wholesale prices can signal that readily available supply is becoming scarce during the most demanding hours. Gary Cunningham, a director at Tradition Energy, said aging facilities are increasingly showing the effects of prolonged operation.

Generating stations have already endured a demanding summer marked by severe heat and repeated federal actions requiring plants to run at very high output. That sustained use can make the autumn repair season especially important, but hot weather is now interfering with the normal maintenance calendar.
Human-caused climate change and natural climate patterns such as El Niño are contributing to more erratic conditions, making it harder to rely on traditional seasonal assumptions. Electricity systems were built around the expectation that some parts of the year would offer a meaningful reprieve. As heat extends later into the year, operators have fewer opportunities to take equipment out of service without increasing reliability risks.
Growth in industrial electricity use and the expansion of data centers are adding to that challenge. Data centers, including those concentrated in northern Virginia, require substantial and continuous power. The accelerating use of artificial intelligence is contributing to broader electricity demand, leaving critical generation and grid equipment with less downtime.
Unseasonable weather “plays well into the narrative of PJM needing more generation capacity, and needing it NOW, even before new demands to meet data center requirements come,” Cunningham wrote in an email.
For consumers, the immediate issue is whether grid operators can maintain adequate supply through the hottest periods. The longer-term question is how power systems will adapt to a future in which maintenance seasons are less predictable, demand continues to grow and aging equipment must operate under increasingly demanding conditions.
