US Ambassador Gor Signals Possible Easing of Kashmir Travel Advisory After Talks with Omar Abdullah

Theindiapostdaily.com – US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated on Wednesday that Washington may lower the level of its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, following a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Speaking at a joint media briefing, Gor framed the region as both an integral component of India and a destination of extraordinary natural beauty that could attract American visitors.

"The United States puts out travel warnings and every so often we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements here today but it is something that we are going to look at. New Delhi, the Chief Minister here, the Govt here, we believe have made some incredible steps to keeping this area safer and making it more safe," Gor said, according to ANI.

Gor went on to explain that the diplomatic mission would assess whether the current advisory warranted a reduction in severity.

"So, we will be looking at if the travel warning that is imposed, that is recommended by the United States is something that should be downgraded. This is a beautiful area, I think a lot of Americans would enjoy coming here and seeing the beauty and opportunity that exists here."

Two-Day Visit to J&K and Ladakh

Gor touched down in Srinagar earlier that morning as part of a two-day itinerary spanning Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. His first stop was the chief minister's residence, where he met Abdullah shortly after landing. He described the encounter as warm and productive, noting that follow-up discussions would be carried back to both Washington and New Delhi.

"I am thrilled to be here. We just had a very good meeting and we have some follow-ups that we hope to take back to Washington (and) back to Delhi. But a very warm, a very cordial meeting and we look forward to building this relationship forward," he said.

The ambassador was scheduled to depart for Ladakh on Thursday.

Abdullah: Conversation Will Continue on Both Sides

Chief Minister Abdullah told reporters, via PTI, that the talks addressed the broader India–US relationship while placing particular weight on matters specific to Jammu and Kashmir. He characterized the session as productive and said the dialogue would extend beyond that single sitting.

"There are obviously certain legacy issues that over time we will be working to resolve. But we look forward to taking this conversation further. This is a conversation that will take place both between Ambassador Gor and Washington, and between me and the Government of India in New Delhi," he further said.

Abdullah voiced optimism that American engagement with the region would expand and intensify over coming years.

Mufti Demands Full Withdrawal of Advisory

People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, also on Wednesday, urged Gor to go further than merely reconsider the advisory and withdraw it entirely. Posting on X, she argued that the highest-level warning functions as more than a routine caution for travellers.

"The least the US Ambassador Sergio Gor @USAmbIndia can do is review and withdraw the highest level travel advisory against visiting Kashmir," Mufti stated.

The former chief minister emphasized that thousands of Kashmiri households depend on tourism for their income and that the advisory's impact reaches well beyond travel planning.

"It is a wall between Kashmir and the world. Lifting it would send a powerful message of confidence, help bring back international tourists and give much-needed relief to countless families whose livelihoods depend on tourism," she added.
