Seven Devotees Killed in Crowd Collapse at Ashokdham Temple, Lakhisara

Theindiapostdaily.com – An official confirmed on Monday that seven people lost their lives when a crowd surged uncontrollably at the Ashokdham Temple in Lakhisara, Bihar. Multiple others sustained injuries in the chaos, which unfolded in a narrow window between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m.

What Triggered the Collapse

The temple had drawn an unusually large turnout of worshippers who had travelled to offer prayers to Lord Shiva during the sacred month of Shravan. District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar explained to ANI that the situation escalated when two trains arrived almost simultaneously, flooding the area with additional passengers.

"Around 6.30-6.45 am, two trains came here, which added to the crowd. Arrangements were made as we had anticipated the crowd. We then came to know that the barricading broke on one side, due to the crowd, and people fell on each other. We rushed 10-15 people here immediately."

Kumar described the swelling of the crowd as having grown in an "unprecedented manner," overwhelming the barriers that had been put in place.

Worshipper's Account of the Moment

A devotee present at the scene recalled the sequence of events in harrowing detail:

"There were women standing in a queue. Around 10-12 women pushed their way in and started pushing us. We fell, and around 20-25 women fell on top of one another. Many fainted after getting trapped under the crowd. This happened because there was a huge rush."

Authorities Investigating Exact Cause

SDPO Shivam Kumar told ANI that seven fatalities had been confirmed so far. He noted that preliminary reports suggested an electric pole may have fallen, electrocuting bystanders and triggering the stampede-like panic. However, he cautioned that a definitive cause could only be established after a full verification of the scene.

"Seven casualties have been reported. It is being said that an electric pole fell there and people were electrocuted, which led to a stampede-like situation. We can tell you the exact reason only after verifying everything."

Chief Minister Extends Condolences

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary took to X to describe the tragedy at Ashok Dham as "extremely tragic and heart-wrenching." He wrote:

"The news of the deaths of devotees in the accident has left my heart deeply distressed. My deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families. Necessary instructions have been issued to the administration for the proper and expeditious treatment of the injured. May God give peace to the departed souls and a swift recovery to the injured."

Further details on the investigation and the condition of the injured remain pending.
