Congress leaders swiftly condemned the rejection, asserting that it was a politically motivated move. Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal accused the ruling BJP of fabricating grounds to remove a Congress candidate from contention. He emphasized that the BJP's actions were part of a larger effort to disrupt democratic procedures, stating, “The allegation of any error or non-disclosure in her nomination is complete humbug and a desperate attempt to snatch a seat from the INC.” Venugopal’s comments on X highlighted the party’s belief that the incident was not about factual omissions but about political gain.

BJP candidate Mahesh Kewat filed a formal complaint with the Returning Officer, alleging that Meenakshi Natarajan deliberately concealed a case filed against her in Telangana. His legal team, represented by Sanket Gupta, argued that the omission violated Supreme Court guidelines on electoral affidavits. “According to Supreme Court instructions, candidates must disclose relevant information in their affidavits,” Gupta stated, underscoring the importance of transparency in the Rajya Sabha election process.
"The information in question is critical to the voters' understanding of the candidate's integrity. Kewat had raised objections under the same provision, and the ECI should have acted on them," Gupta was quoted as saying.
Natarajan's Response: Allegations of Democratic Stifling
Meenakshi Natarajan, the rejected Congress candidate, accused the BJP of undermining democratic processes. She claimed the rejection was a calculated effort to control the Rajya Sabha poll outcomes. “When the number of members was insufficient, and the BJP introduced a third candidate, everything began to unravel,” Natarajan said, criticizing the party’s tactics as a “politics of muzzling democracy.”
